Chiropractic: Is it Safe?

Quite a few people in Midtown East, NY have never been to a chiropractor, and if you've never received a chiropractic adjustment, you quite possibly have some questions about how chiropractic actually works and how it can help you improve your overall health.

A common one we hear from brand new patients is: "Is chiropractic safe?"

First, there are about 60,000 chiropractors in the USA and they see about 30 million patients. If each person sees their chiropractor three times a year, that's about 90 million chiropractic adjustments each year in the country. If chiropractic wasn't safe, we'd certainly be learning about it the news.

Second, there's real scientific literature that indicates that chiropractic is safe. The esteemed medical journal Spine published an article in 2013 that evaluated 183 people in Australia. 92 patients received two chiropractic adjustments each; the other 91 patients received a fake adjustment. The investigators had all of the test subjects complete a questionnaire asking about any side effects that the patients might have observed.

They found that there were "no serious adverse events" from chiropractic adjustments. Some individuals did document muscle tightness or a slight increase in pain immediately after the adjustment, but these were transitory.

Even the AMA recommends that people see a chiropractor before going through more aggressive treatment, like surgery. In 2013, the Canadian Family Physician recommended chiropractic care for pregnant women who want to avoid medications. Moreover, many of our patients bring their kids in for chiropractic care and some research shows that it can be beneficial for colic in babies.
